Territorial Rights of Dodgers and Angels.

There are two variations of The Southland. 1) There is the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) which is devided into 2 Metropolitan Divisions: a) Los Angeles (OMB Listing- Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale), and b) Orange County (Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine).

2) The second variation of The Southland is the Combined Statistical Area (CSA) which is a consolidation of three MSA’s: a) LA-OC, b) The Inland Empire (Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario) and c) Ventura County (Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura).

The Dodgers and The Angels Baseball Franchises were given the SAME Territorial Rights. The Territorial Rights of these two MLB Teams are congruent with The C.S.A. Variation of The Southland. The Media Market Area is also congruent with The CSA. Territorial Rights should not be confused with “Monopolies (turfs).” It’s just like the Game of Monopoly. At the beginning, all the players have the same run of the board, but later on in the game, the players each have established “Monopolies” in different areas. Since these two teams came to Southern California, The Dodgers have built their MLB Monopoly in Los Angeles, where The Angels built their’s in Orange County.

In recent years, Since the Anaheim Angels won the World Series in 2002, The Angels have sought to go after The Dodger’s as well. That cannot be accomplished as an Anaheim Team, so the team became the Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim). Unfortunately, because these two teams have the same territorial rights, The Angels aren’t doing anything illegal. The philosophy behind Major League Baseball, however, is that it is about “The love of the game, the fans, and families, ” not satisfying the avarice of MLB Owners, Executives, and the players. Going after another team more less goes against the grain of this philosophy. Unfortunately, there is no legal way to stop Arte Moreno. But there are ways of taking evasive action.

The Dodger’ Advertising Slogans like “This is L.A;” or “Dodgertown,” and “This is My Town.” have been very effective in thwarting Moreno’s efforts. As long as The Dodgers take evasive action in this regard, and The Dodger Fans stand behind these campaigns, The Dodgers won’t have much to worry about in the long haul.
